Why we love playing Video Games
Introduction
The video gaming industry is colossal—it even surpasses the entire entertainment industry. Everyone loves playing games, and there's a diverse range of genres and production houses out there. We see top-notch games created by huge production houses as well as innovative creations from solo indie developers. Today, I’m here to share my perspective on why I love playing video games so much.
NPC Feeling
Consider the vastness of our world, with 7 billion people, each living as the main character of their own life. You, the one reading this, have a life as complex as mine. Your friend lives a life just as intricate, yet you’re merely a side character in their story. And for countless others, you’re not even a side character at all—you’re just an NPC.
But how can you be an NPC? Aren’t you the hero of your own life? How can a hero be relegated to the background?
Video games, on the other hand, offer the everlasting feeling of being the main character. In the digital realm, you’re never just another face in the crowd; you’re the most important figure. You’re the one who saves the world, shoulders all the responsibilities, and vanquishes evil. In real life, such heroics are often relegated to the realm of dreams.
You might be doing important things, but in the larger scheme of things, they may seem insignificant. The ones truly moving the needle are at the top—the Elon Musks, the Jeff Bezoses, the Ambanis. They are the real main characters of the world, and while they might experience similar high-stakes decision-making moments, I believe their core reasons for playing games might be different. In video games, however, you’re not just a local maxima on planet Earth—you are the global maxima.
Conclusion
This, in my view, is one of the fundamental reasons why we love playing video games. They allow us to step out of the confines of everyday life and assume a role where our actions have monumental significance. Whether it’s the thrill of saving a digital world or the simple joy of feeling truly important, video games offer an unparalleled escape. These thoughts are just my perspective—perhaps not the whole picture, but a testament to the magnetic allure of being the main character in a universe that is always at your command.
